Children’s Publisher For Little People Launches Three Book Titles!

by | Apr 22, 2026 | Lifestyle | 0 comments

JOHANNESBURG, April 2026 – Every now and then, a brand comes along that feels less like a product launch and more like a movement. Children’s publisher For Little People is making its retail debut at Exclusive Books with the release of its first three titles – I Am Beautiful and So Are You!The Story of Bumble the Bee, and The Story of a Hundred Dresses.

With the official book launch set for Saturday, 25 April 2026, just two days after World Book Day (on 23 April 2026), this is a fitting debut for a brand built on the widely-held premise that the stories children read shape how they see themselves. As the world pauses to celebrate the transformative power of books this coming Thursday, For Little People steps forward with an urgent message – that every child deserves to see themselves in the pages of the stories they read.

The power of representation
Founded by Thabisile Sambo, also the author of all three titles, For Little People emerged from a deeply personal need to create stories that affirm and celebrate children of colour; stories that many parents still struggle to find readily available. What started off as heartfelt storytelling, created so her daughter could see herself in the stories Sambo made up at bedtime, has now evolved into a growing publishing collection with a powerful purpose.

“For Little People was created to ensure that children see themselves reflected in the stories they read. When children can see themselves, it shapes how they understand their beauty, voice and place in the world,” says Sambo.

Reading as an act of affirmation
The need for representation in children’s literature is well documented. Recent findings from the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education’s Reflecting Realities 2025 report highlight, both, progress and ongoing gaps in the representation of children of colour in literature. While 24% of children’s books published in the UK in 2024 featured racially minoritised characters, the figure still doesn’t fully reflect the diversity of real-world audiences.

In a South African context, the need for inclusive, representative storytelling is more urgent. It is within this gap that For Little People tailors its purpose to create stories that reflect the lived experiences, identities and voices of all children – especially children of colour. By doing so, For Little People is not only contributing to a growing global shift towards inclusivity in children’s publishing, but also helping to shape a generation of confident, self-assured readers who can see themselves reflected in the stories they read.

For Little People’s three debut titles each invite children into worlds where they are seen, celebrated, and affirmed. These are not merely books; they are mirrors that reflect back to every child the truth that matters most – that they are enough, exactly as they are.

Making reading purposeful this World Book Day
With the three titles arriving in the same week as World Book Day, a global celebration of storytelling and imagination, For Little People’s launch is a bold statement of intent. “Through the launch, we hope to tap into a broader conversation around reading culture and the importance of representation in childhood as something that shapes confidence, belonging and self-worth,” explains Sambo.

World Book Day 2026, celebrated under the theme Turning Pages, Changing Futures, is a UNESCO-led global observance that reminds us that, if anything, reading is a lifeline. “Reading fuels imagination, helps build empathy, and gives children the language to understand themselves and others. And when children see their full spectrum reflected in the books they read, that power is multiplied. For Little People is committed to ensuring that no child ever reaches for a book where they feel excluded or underrepresented,” says Sambo.

The start of a movement
With more titles already in the pipeline, this launch marks the beginning of a journey set to grow into something far greater than a publishing house. For Little People is on a mission to ensure that every child, regardless of their skin colour or hair texture, picks up a book and recognises themselves as the hero of the story.

ABOUT THE DEBUT TITLES

  • I Am Beautiful and So Are You!, a joyful, affirming celebration of a positive self-image and beauty in all its forms, reminding every child that they are perfect just as they are.
  • The Story of Bumble the Beea tale of courage and belonging that reminds children that being different is, in fact, their greatest strength.
  • The Story of a Hundred Dresses, a vibrant story of imagination and identity that teaches basic numeracy through celebrating South African cultures.

The three debut titles are available from 25 April 2026 at Exclusive Books stores nationwide.
